Urban renewal, modernisation of historic building
Project example: Bastionstrasse 31, Düsseldorf
Bastionstrasse 31 is located at the interface between the Dusseldorf Altstadt and Karlstadt. The Napoleonic influence on the planning of Königsallee, and Karlstadt is well preserved and many of the buildings in Bastionstrasse and surrounding streets are listed for conservation as indeed is the “Strassenbild” or appearance of the street as a whole.
Bastionstrasse 31 was damaged in WW2 and never properly restored. O’Neill Consulting was appointed architect in 2003 to prepare the application to the city of Düsseldorf for approval to partially demolish, renew and extend the nineteenth century front building rearwards (and upwards by one story) and to refurbish the inner courtyard and surrounding outbuildings. When complete it will contain three retail units at ground level with offices and apartments on the upper levels. O’Neill Consulting is responsible for preparing urban design and detailed architectural proposals, negotiating a full approval with the local authority, preparing tender documents and supervising construction.
